A Mustang - And A Humbling Start

Well, we made it to Washington and, I'm pleased to say, Dollar Car Rental came up with the goods and provided us with a Ford Mustang Convertible.  We had a choice of silver or white but, to be honest, it was a case of choosing the one with the least scuffs in the bodywork. So, silver it was.

It was a lovely sunny day in Washington DC so we headed off with the roof down and the first drive was a pleasure.  Good, comfy seats with loads of room, even for Big Col.  Plus, the roof being down allows us to enjoy the sound of the V6 doing its thing.

The ride wasn't as firm as I anticipated so we should certainly be comfortable enough for our marathon trip with the Mustang.   I think we're going to get along just fine.

We made it to our first stopover, which was Georgetown.  This allowed us to wander around Washington DC just a few miles down the road.

We had a look at the White House, which is obligatory for visitors to this fine city.  So many people have said it's smaller than they imagined, that it was bigger than I imagined.

But much more thought provoking was a walk around the World War II memorial and across to the Lincoln Memorial.  The sun was going down as we paid our respects to the fallen.

It's hard to comprehend the wall of stars.  Even though we've learnt about the scale of the sacrifice given for freedom, it's jarring to learn that each star on the wall represents 100 soldiers who lost their lives in WWII.

So it's been a humbling start to our roadtrip, which is only possible because we can enjoy that freedom.

The sense of history and reflection seems to seep out from the ground as you walk towards the Lincoln  Memorial.

We're already over 3000 miles from home, but that journey was only to get to the start of our main journey - Capitol Hill to San Francisco.

We'll set off from here properly on Sunday morning and put the Mustang through its paces when we head off through West Virginia as we pick up Highway 50.

First, though, we are going to spend tomorrow checking out the Capitol Building and the Smithsonian. And we might try and find out whether we really sat in the booth in Martin's Bar, Georgetown, where JFK proposed to Jackie...  Hmmmm...

See you in Virginia. :0)
